SLACKER Trailer Review

Trailers are an important tool in building buzz and anticipation for films. A good trailer can sell a bad movie, a bad trailer can kill a good movie. Here we try and tell the difference between the two and pick out the most anticipated new films.
More after the jump...

THE AMERICAN

The most notable thing about this project, for me, is that it is Anton Corbijn's directorial follow-up to Control, my favourite film of 2007. Add in the star power of George Clooney to this dark, brooding spy thriller and i'm intrigued to see how that will mesh with Corbijn's style. Well, firstly it's in colour, whereas Corbijn tends to work in black and white. Given the surrounding Italian landscape, i'm sure this will be visually interesting, but the story hasn't completely gripped me from this trailer.

SECRETARIAT

I think i almost just slipped into a diabetic coma. Based on the 'impossible true story' of a wealthy housewife who put her horses out to work so she could make more money. What?? A lady horse owner?? Crazy town. Pure Disney schmaltz that i can't see making it to cinemas over here. Never mind Seabiscuit, this thing tastes of air biscuit.

SUPER 8

Wow. well, as you may have guessed (assuming this video is still working), this video was shot during a screening of Iron Man 2 in the US using a camcorder. Well that nice chap has put it onto Youtube for everyone to see. I hope Paramount leave this up there, especially if they're trying to mirror the viral campaign of Cloverfield. But what is this? Is it a Cloverfield prequel? It might not even end up being called Super 8. Just speculating but for a prequel set in 1979 they would have only had Super 8 cameras to record the monstrous rampage of a big monster. Abrams has said it's unrelated, but either way i hope they appreciate the irony of someone posting their homage to home recording equipment on a video hosting website. I know the sound quality is a bit crappy but this'll have to do for now. When that door starts to burst open, you can't help but want to see more. The presence of Steven Spielberg's name alongside JJ Abrams' only heightens the expectations.

RUBBER

Okay, so not really a trailer, more of a bizarre little teaser. One things for certain; it definitely makes you want to see more. Directed by Quentin Dupieux (better known as Mr Oizo. Yep, the guy who gave us Flat Eric in the 90's) it's an oddball nightmarish tale of a killer tyre, rolling around a town getting revenge for his fallen comrades. Yes, i'm very intrigued.

Oh, and just in case you're feeling some 90's nostalgia, here's the video for Flat Beat.
