SLACKER trailer review

Trailers are an important tool in building buzz and anticipation for films. A good trailer can sell a bad movie, a bad trailer can kill a good movie. Here we try and tell the difference between the two and pick out the most anticipated new films.
More after the jump...

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
Essentially what they've done is pimp out the regular trailer, and turned it into an interactive smorgasbord of information. Remember Pop-Up Video? Like that but in 8-bit. I've never seen this done before, but it works perfectly for this film. The impact is slightly damaged if you already know most of these bits of info, but I could keep on clicking and listening to those sound effects all day. I really can't wait for this movie.

If you want to watch the other trailers in peace, I recommend you turn Mr Pilgrim's volume down to zero. It looks like this at the end of the progress bar.

BURLESQUE

Hmmm, something about this looks...familiar. It looks like the script has been taken from a madman's scrawling of the plot of Showgirls on the back of a cocktail napkin. Don't want it. Send it back please. Cher looks like she can barely move her face when she talks, and as for Christina Aguilera; sorry love, you're way too old to play this role. From what I can guess from the trailer it's your average 'small-town girl heads off to make it as a dancer in the big city' story, except in the end it doesn't matter that she can't dance because she can belt out a tune. Dance films either need to be for kids or categorically for grown ups. This doesn't know what it wants to be.

THE VIRGINITY HIT

Of course it's not real, but they actually do an okay job of keeping up the pretense here. As to why the supposedly nice main guy would allow (or even want) his friends to film him losing his virginity, who knows. All his friends seem like those annoying American teens that run around shouting "spring break, wooo!", and I'm pretty sure that'll annoy the hell out of me over 90 minutes. Still, it's an interesting enough idea that looks convincingly shot. I'm sure the younger generation will love it.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

Wow. Did you see the certification disclaimer at the beginning? VIOLENCE AND TERROR. That might as well be the tagline. An effective teaser trailer that will work a thousand times better in the cinema, this doesn't show you anything for the first 45 seconds but will have you curled up in a little ball waiting for the jump. I'll be honest that I don't even think of Katie Holmes as an actress anymore, but we'll see what she can do here. Having Guillermo Del Toro's name attached as producer definitely helps its chances at the box office, and if they can deliver scares like the one under the bedsheets, I'm in.

  1. I've always wanted a Showgirls sequel. This is the next best thing.

  2. There is a Showgirls sequel! I forget the name but it's based around one of the minor characters from the original. I'm sure I'll write about it when more information appears!
